Kathy Barwick, a Sacramento native, has played bluegrass music since 1977,
when she switched from folk guitar to bluegrass banjo, and eventually dobro and
back to flatpicked guitar. The founder of The All Girl Boys, Kathy has also
performed with Bill Grant and Delia Bell, the Avocado Brothers, and the
Bluegrass Philharmonic. Kathy now performs regularly with several groups,
including Mountain Laurel, a bluegrass band from the Grass Valley area, and
Poetic Justis, a folk/blues duo. Kathy taught music (banjo, dobro, and guitar)
full-time from 1979 through 1984 and has taught intermittently since. An
accomplished flatpicker, she contributes instructional articles regularly to
"Flatpicking Guitar Magazine." Kathy has taught at the California Coast Music
Camp and at Bill Evans' Bluegrass For Beginners Camp. Class Description Flatpick
Guitar: Prerequisites: Know the basic folk and bluegrass guitar chords and be
able to switch between them at a moderate tempo. Know the chords to some common
folk or bluegrass songs. We’ll cover the basic elements of playing simple rhythm
guitar (strums and bass runs), some easy leads, and some very basic music theory
(how chord progressions work, where to put your capo, etc.). We’ll use very
common songs (stuff like Oh Susannah, Red River Valley, You Are My Sunshine—or
other songs, if we can find ones all of us know) to illustrate some easy but
very effective ways to play a simple solo. Copies of tablature, lyrics and
exercises will be provided. Equipment: your guitar (of course), a capo, and a
flatpick (I recommend medium or heavy gauge). I also recommend bringing a
recording device. |
