Two Consecutive Serial Numbered 1984 Custom Martin D-28s

These two beauties are both a One of a Kind. They were custom ordered in 1983 and delivered in 1984. This was before the time that Martin Guitars offered reissued guitar. These guitars both just say "Custom" on the neck block where the model number would be. A collector owned an original 1934 mint condition and wanted one built identically so he could actually take the guitar out of his house. He made a template of his mint D-28 in 4 places on the neck, traced the peg-head, even counted the grains per inch on the top and came up with an unbelievable custom order. When the music store that ordered this guitar saw the detail of the order they commissioned a second guitar without a sunburst finish. Steve acquired the sunburst in 1988. Tony Rice nicknamed it "The Cannon". Steve then acquired the Natural Top D-28 in 2004. You cannot believe the playability and response of these killer bones.

Every detail on each guitar was custom specified:

  • Square Peghead

  • Small Post Open Back Grover Gears

  • C.F. Martin Stamp in the Back of the Peghead

  • V-Neck

  • Wide Fingerboard

  • Squares and Diamond Inlay Pattern

  • Barr Frets

  • Ivoroid Binding

  • Brazilian Rosewood Back and Sides

  • Silver Spruce Top

  • Sunburst ( Ser. No. 454540)

  • 30's Style Pick Guard on 454539

  • Real Tortoise Shell Pick Guard on Ser. No. 454540

  • Fossil Ivory Nut, Saddle, Bridge Pins and end Pin on Ser. No. 454540

  • Sunburst comes with an Ameritage Case

  • 454539 comes with original Black Molded Martin Case

  • Both have original order and paperwork

These guitars came out prior to Mandolin Brothers first Reissue series that sold in the late 80's for $25,000 each.

George Gruhn stated that he had never seen a guitar detailed this much for a reissue. That this guitar was ordered by a collector for a collector. Not sold separately. We have already turned down a lot for this pair of consecutive serial numbered custom Martins. Serious offers only.
